Getting started

The Internet is full of sites for learning English. The problem is that there are so many it’s difficult to choose.

We have made a selection of web pages to help you quickly locate useful ones.

There is a brief description of each resource – except for those that need no introduction.

Our criteria for selecting exercises :

the objective is learning and understanding (that is, they’re not just tests of knowledge), images, graphs, examples and/or other ways of leading to understanding are included, immediate feedback is given to each question, the context is as realistic as possible, they are interesting and fun to do. The links lead to resources as directly as possible. The links are to pages rather than to sites.

About Search Engines

Use these to find the name of the person or the subject you want to find on the Internet. Type in a name or phrase and the search engine will give you a list of sites. Be as precise as possible or you will get lost in hundreds, and even thousands, of answers. Google is probable the best search engine at the moment.

Basic Search Tips
English through the Internet A course created by a teacher in Israel. You learn to use the Internet step-by-step.
Free Email Address Directory You will need to have an e-mail address to use forums, chat rooms and, of course, to write to your friends.

Podcasts

What are Podcasts?

Wikipedia : « A podcast is a series of digital-media files which are distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and computers. The term is a portmanteau of the words « iPod » and « broadcast », the Apple iPod being the brand of portable media player for which the first podcasting scripts were developed. Such scripts allow podcasts to be automatically transferred to a mobile device after they are downloaded. »

Grammar exercises

Exercises to help you understand English grammar.

Grammar doesn’t mean learning rules by heart, it means understanding and feeling how the language is structured. Small children learn the grammar of the language(s) spoken around them because it is contextualised by what they see and hear. The grammar exercises selected here aim to make meaning clear in a similar way through the use of images and concrete examples.

Concordancers & Safaris

There are lots of grammar quizzes and exercises on the Internet. You’ll also find grammar explanations but they are often over simplified, don’t take into account modern usage, and sometimes are just plain wrong.

Here are some other ways of investigating how English is really used :

Grammar Safari University of Illinois — Using the Internet to find examples of specific words. The article is quite old.
British National Corpus – 1980s-1993 The concordancer will give you examples of how is a word is used in context. Based on several large corpora of modern spoken and written British English. Gives complete sentences.
Corpus of Contemporary American English – 1990-2007 Similar to the British one, but with a larger corpus.
Voice of America’s special English Programs Charles Kelly — Complete sentences given. The examples are easier than the other concordancers.
The Compleat Lexical Tutor Tom Cobb – Université du Québec — A very original site with a lot of different ways of working on words. For some of them you have to down load a plug-in.
