Proper nouns are the names given to unique people or things so they do not usually have an article (the or a/an) in front.

But when people give names to people and things they do what they like. Some years ago, the people of the small country Gambia decided to call their country The Gambia to avoid confusion with Zambia.

Some names of countries begin "The..." because, at first, the name was just a description of a geographical place.
